2022 NFL Trade Deadline: 5 Deals That Increased Overall Team Health

T.J. Hockenson Takes Over For Injured Irv Smith Jr.

The blockbuster of the day came from Minnesota shoring up the tight end spot two days after Irv Smith Jr. suffered a high ankle sprain in the win over the Cardinals. News broke after the trade that Smith is expected to miss at least 8 weeks with the injury, opening up plenty of playing time and targets for new addition T.J. Hockenson. The lifelong Lion has 26 catches for 395 yards and 3 touchdowns this season. Smith had 22 catches for 168 yards and 2 touchdowns prior to injury

RB Chase Edmonds Heads to Denver

Former Miami Dolphins running back Chase Edmonds was included in the package that landed Bradley Chubb in Miami. Denver general manager George Paton told reporters that Melvin Gordon will remain the Broncos’ starting running back, but Edmonds figures to get a majority of the receiving work with Javonte Williams out for the season following his torn ACL.

Edmonds had 10 catches for 96 yards with the Dolphins, plus 42 carries for 120 yards and 2 touchdowns this season. He had 43 catches for 311 yards in 12 games with the Cardinals last season.

Ravens Get Star Linebacker Roquan Smith

This defensive blockbuster sent star linebacker Roquan Smith to Baltimore in exchange for linebacker A.J. Klein, a 2023 second-round pick and a 2023 fifth-round pick. Smith figures to slot in alongside Patrick Queen and shore up a defense that has been plagued by injuries all season. The Ravens also recently activated Tyus Bowser and David Ojabo off the PUP list, potentially giving them some help with their already dominant pass rushing ability. Through Week 8, Baltimore ranks fifth in the league with 23 sacks.

Chiefs CB Rashod Fenton to the Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons sent a conditional seventh-round pick to the Chiefs for 25-year-old cornerback Rashad Fenton, who is in the final year of his 4-year extension and is owed $1.4 million this season. Fenton will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason but will help fill a thin secondary the rest of the season.

Atlanta has No. 2 cornerback Casey Hayward Jr. on IR with a shoulder injury and No. 1 cornerback A.J. Terrell missed last week’s game with a hamstring strain he picked up in Week 7.

Fenton should have an immediate impact in a secondary that has allowed the most passing yard in the league this season.

Bills Add Depth at Safety With Dean Marlowe

With Micah Hyde out for the season after undergoing back surgery and Jordan Poyer dealing with a left elbow injury he reaggravated Sunday night, Buffalo swapped a seventh-round pick for Atlanta safety Dean Marlowe.

Marlowe got his first start of the season in Week 8 filling in for Jaylinn Hawkins. The seven-year veteran has 11 combined tackles on the season. Last season with Detroit, he had 67 combined tackles and 2 passes defended in 16 games.
