Hendon Hooker was drafted by the Lions in the early third round, which is a favorable landing spot where he is unlikely to be rushed back. Hooker is currently recovering from an ACL tear suffered on November 19 and will not be ready for the start of the NFL season. He is expected to begin the year on the Non-Football Injury list to free up a roster spot while he recovers.
The Lions signed David Montgomery to a three-year, $18 million contract this offseason. The former Bears running back is set to assume Jamaal Williams' role, but he missed OTAs due to an undisclosed injury. Although the Lions have reported that they are exercising caution, this situation should be monitored.
The Lions' right guard missed the 2022 season due to a back injury. The team has shown confidence in Vaitai's return this season by renegotiating his contract, resulting in a larger cap hit if he were to be cut. His back should hold up during the 2023 season but it threatens his longevity in the league.
Walker tore his Achilles on Sept. 25 in the Lions' Week 3 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. He led the team in tackles in 2021 as a starting safety. Walker participated in some drills during OTAs and minicamp and was cleared last week to take part in training camp. However, the Pro Football Docs have serious concerns about his effectiveness early in the season.
Former 49ers cornerback Emmanuel Mosley tore his ACL on October 9th in a game against the Carolina Panthers. Mosley signed with the Lions this offseason on a one-year, $6 million deal. He participated in offseason activities but has not been cleared for training camp.
