The second-year receiver out of Ohio State missed time at OTAs with Achilles tendinitis, but the Pro Football Docs do not see it as a major issue heading into the season. The team can manage his practice reps if it flares up, but either way it is unlikely to affect his in-game performance. Our panel of doctors have serious concerns about Penning’s chances to play effectively returning from his right foot Lisfranc injury. The Saints’ left tackle suffered the injury in early July and may start the season on the PUP list. He missed the first 11 games of the season with an undisclosed issue in the opposite foot.
Ruiz also suffered a Lisfranc injury in his left foot last season, but his injury happened a few weeks prior to Penning’s. Ruiz will likely participate in training camp, but will not be fully effective to start the season if he plays.
If Ruiz or Penning aren’t ready by the start of the season, James Hurst and Nick Saldiveri may be in line for more playing time.
