According to the NFL, the NFL PUP (Physically Unable to Perform) list is a roster designation for players who are unable to participate in football activities due to injuries sustained prior to the start of training camp or during the previous season. Here’s how it works:
Eligibility: A player is eligible for the PUP list if they were injured before the start of training camp and have not yet participated in any practice sessions. Once a player participates in practice, they can no longer be placed on the PUP list.
Types of PUP Lists:
Active/PUP List: Players start training camp on this list. They count against the 90-man roster limit but can return to practice at any time during the preseason.
Reserve/PUP List: At the start of the regular season, players who remain unable to play are placed on this list and do not count against the 53-man roster limit.
Return Timeline: Players on the Reserve/PUP list must miss at least the first four games of the regular season. After this period, they have a five-week window to begin practicing. Once they start practicing, teams have a three-week window to decide whether to activate them, release them, or place them on injured reserve for the remainder of the season.
Injury Type: The injuries must be related to football activities for a player to be eligible for the PUP list.
A player’s placement on the PUP can signify several things, but the most likely factor is that he did not pass his entry physical at training camp. Passing a physical is not black and white, thus a player could pass a physical with one doctor while another may have caution about his continuing recovery.
A player not landing on PUP at the start of training camp does not mean he is 100% recovered. It could simply mean that the doctor trusts the team’s plan to manage the players reps and he cannot do any new damage or prolong his recovery by practicing.
According to the NFL, the NFL Non-Football Injury (NFI) list is a roster designation for players who are unable to participate in football activities due to injuries or illnesses that are unrelated to football. Here are the key points about the NFI list:
Purpose: The NFI list is used for players who suffered injuries or ailments outside of football activities, such as during the offseason or in non-football-related incidents.
Types of NFI Lists:
Active/NFI List: During the preseason, players on this list count towards the 90-man roster limit but can be moved to the Reserve/NFI list if they remain unable to participate by the start of the regular season.
Reserve/NFI List: Players on this list do not count against the 53-man roster limit and must sit out a minimum of four games.
Player Compensation: Teams are not obligated to pay a player's salary while on the NFI list, as the injury did not occur during team activities.
Examples of NFI Causes: Examples of situations that could lead to an NFI designation include car accidents, illnesses, or any other injuries not related to football.
