49ers Struggling With Injuries To Running Backs, Trey Sermon Most Likely To Play Week 3

The running backs for 49ers present an interesting dilemma. Raheem Mostert is out for the season. Jeff Wilson Jr. had a meniscus repair and is likely out for most, if not all, of the season. Now, the three other running backs all have injury concerns. Rookie Trey Sermon is recovering from a concussion he suffered against the Eagles on Sunday. In the same game, second-year player JaMycal Hasty suffered a left high ankle injury and rookie Elijah Mitchell suffered a right shoulder injury. At this point, based on our analysis, Sermon seems to be the one that's most likely to return to play on Sunday. He was in a non-contact jersey on Thursday and got in a limited practice, just like he did on Wednesday. Next most likely to return is Elijah Mitchell, who still has a shot, but is far from guaranteed to return from his shoulder/stinger issue. He has not practiced both days this week and neither has Hasty, who has essentially been ruled out. If Sermon and Mitchell are unavailable, Trenton Cannon, who was just picked up off of waivers last week from the Ravens, would be the starter. XFL star running back Jacques Patrick would be next in line after San Francisco signed him from the Bengals' practice squad.
