5 MLB Injury Storylines To Watch

Will Yordan Alvarez Undergo Hand Surgery?

The AL West-leading Astros placed DH Yordan Alvarez on the 10-day IL with a lingering hand injury.

Manager Dusty Baker tentatively expects Alvarez to return against the Yankees on July 21, but our team of ProBaseballDocs beg to differ and anticipate an extended absence.

The Docs believe that a surgery to excise a damaged portion of Alvarez’s right hamate bone is the best course of action, which would leave him out for 6-to-8 weeks.

Wander Franco Also Heading For Surgery on Injured Hand

Rays star shortstop Wander Franco left Saturday’s game in the first inning after injuring himself on a swing against hard-throwing Reds starter Hunter Greene.

Franco was placed on the 10-day IL immediately after the game and manager Kevin Cash told reporters the injury is to the hamate bone.

As our Pro Baseball Docs detailed yesterday, Franco is also likely to miss 6-to-8 weeks.

Jonathan Aranda will take his spot on the roster but it remains to be seen who will play shortstop for Tampa Bay with Franco out.

The State Of The Red Sox

Left-handed ace Chris Sale is scheduled to make his season debut this Tuesday as the Red Sox experience their worst injury luck of the season.

Starting pitchers Nathan Eovaldi, Michael Wacha, Rich Hill, Garrett Whittlock, and Connor Seabold, and relievers Matt Barnes and Tyler Danish, have all been placed on the 15-day IL over the last month.

Additionally, third baseman Rafael Devers missed two straight games against the Yankees after aggravating a low-back injury and everyman Christian Arroyo went to the 10-day IL with a left groin strain, joining centerfielder Enrique Hernandez.

Eovaldi is progressing through a rehab assignment and is the closest to the majors of the bunch, but Boston will have to work with a cobblestone pitching staff for the short-term future.

Jacob deGrom’s Impending Return

Mets’ ace Jacob deGrom made his second rehab start at Class-A on Friday and will graduate to a 50-pitch limit in Triple-A for his next appearance as he works his way back from a March shoulder stress reaction.

He is expected to start on either Wednesday or Thursday after striking out 11 of 18 batters across 4.2 scoreless innings for St. Lucie.

The ProBaseballDocs have been steadfast that deGrom would face an extended absence and could be in danger of facing further injury issues as he battles kinetic chain arm ailments for the second consecutive season.

Concern In The Cardinals’ Outfield

Despite dominant play from Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado the Cardinals have run into some recent struggles while dealing with a rotating door at multiple spots in their outfield.

Tyler O’Neill suffered a right wrist injury on Wednesday night in what was expected to be his final tune-up before returning Friday.

O’Neill has played only 13 of the last 52 games because of shoulder, hamstring, and now hand injuries.

Centerfielder Harrison Bader will remain out until after the all-star break with plantar fasciitis while both Dylan Carlson and Brendan Donovan missed games this weekend with knee soreness and a non-covid illness, respectively.

Bonus: How Long Will Jurickson Profar Miss After Collision?

Padres’ versatile second baseman Jurickson Profar was placed on the 7-day concussion IL after taking a knee to his jaw and losing his balance on the field on Thursday night.

Profar suffered a cervical neck strain in addition to his apparent concussion but luckily didn’t sustain any damage to his face or jaw.

Concussions are notoriously difficult to project, as symptoms differ between injuries depending on the player, their history, and the severity of the concussion.

Mariners’ centerfielder Kyle Lewis hasn’t played since suffering a concussion on May 28 while Reds’ catcher Tyler Stephenson was sidelined for 10 games after a violent collision on April 19.
