The Padres’ star third baseman missed both weekend games with tennis elbow in his right arm. The non-baseball injury is unlikely to linger or be a long-term issue, according to our ProBaseballDocs, but the Padres have been hyper-cautious with their key players returning from injuries.
The 29-year-old MVP candidate is expected to return to the lineup on Monday, but it will be interesting to see if San Diego continues to employ him as their everyday third baseman with the right elbow irritation or if he sees more time at DH.
The White Sox lost another player from the heart of their lineup on Sunday when star shortstop Tim Anderson suffered a significant right groin strain.
An MRI on Monday will be important in determining the severity of the injury and length of his absence.
Anderson joins Eloy Jiménez and Lance Lynn, who are both in the middle of long-term rehabs, as well as Luis Robert and Yoan Moncada, who each missed this weekend’s cross-city series but are expected to return soon.
Anderson will be a tough element to replace. He is batting .356 with 24 runs, 19 RBI, and nine stolen bases as the leadoff hitter to go along with his consistent defense and is the heart and soul of the White Sox.
The AL Central-leading Twins suffered two losses on Sunday, as veteran starter Sonny Gray and rookie shortstop Royce Lewis each left early with pain.
Gray, who spent three weeks on the IL with an April hamstring strain, was pulled after six one-run, two-hit innings with right pectoral tightness. Rocco Baldelli said he will undergo an MRI, but will travel with the team on their upcoming series.
He has a 2.41 ERA and 39 strikeouts
Lewis, who started in centerfield, was replaced in the fourth inning with right knee pain. He went 0-1 in one at-bat and is expected to need a trip to the IL. The 22-year-old has two home runs and five RBI on an .867 OPS while filling in for both Carlos Correa and Max Kepler.
The Twins placed Lewis on the 10-day IL Monday with a right knee bone bruise.
Fellow rookie Joe Ryan is still out on the Covid-19 list and has missed one scheduled start. With reliever Danny Coloumbe also on the 15-day IL, Minnesota will be slim on the bump if Ryan and Gray miss their starts this week.
Ryan would have been set to start this Tuesday and Gray on Friday.
Clayton Kershaw Progressing In Rehab
Dodgers’ southpaw star Clayton Kershaw began throwing from 90 feet this week after a minor setback in his return from pelvic/hip inflammation.
He was placed on the 15-day IL on May 13 with si joint inflammation, and the Docs anticipated a relatively short stint on the IL. He has already missed the minimum time and is likely to require a rehab start before he returns to the Dodgers.
The 34-year-old had a 4-0 record with a 1.80 ERA and 32 strikeouts before the injury.
The Mets’ pitching staff has already been through the ringer this season, as top three starters Jacob deGrom, Max Scherzer, and Tylor Megill have all spent time on the IL. It appears that the youngest of the bunch, Megill, is expected to begin throwing to live batters as he rehabs from a right biceps injury.
Megill has been out since May 11 with biceps tendinitis, and the Docs anticipated a cautious approach from New York. He has missed the minimum time and is progressing towards a return, but we will get a good sense of his status in the next week.
Megill has been a revelation without deGrom, posting a 4-2 record with a 2.43 ERA, .189 opponent batting average, and 38 strikeouts through six starts. He was rocked for eight runs in 1.1 IP in his final start, which spurred the MRI that revealed the biceps injury.
