5 MLB Injury Storylines To Watch This Week

Padres Lose Two More Stars

The Padres postponed Fernando Tatis Jr.’s recovery timeline after his latest CT scan and followed that up by losing ace Joe Musgrove to the COVID-19 list and Manny Machado to a significant ankle sprain.

Musgrove will be the first back of the three and could return sometime this week to a rotation that just got back Mike Clevinger from the IL.

Machado and Tatis Jr., according to the ProBaseballDocs, are each likely to be out until the all-star break after Machado suffered a left ankle injury on Sunday. The Padres have yet to determine his timeline but will have to find a replacement for their MVP contending third baseman.

San Diego is also without Wil Myers who is managing knee inflammation and attempting to do so without surgery.

Tim Anderson Returning To Struggling White Sox

The White Sox will reinstate star shortstop Tim Anderson from the 10-day IL to hit leadoff in Monday’s game after a shorter-than-expected absence.

Anderson suffered a groin strain in late May and the Docs initially worried he could miss extended time, but he will return after three weeks and immediately return to his place in the lineup and in the field.

How he moves at shortstop and on the bases will be something to watch to ensure he doesn’t suffer an aggravation.

Mookie Betts’ Cracked Rib Timeline

Dave Roberts announced on Saturday that MVP outfielder Mookie Betts suffered a cracked rib and will head to the IL. Betts said on Sunday that he is hopeful he can return in two weeks as the cracked rib “[has] just got to do it’s thing.”

The ProBaseballDocs expect Betts to miss four-to-five weeks and return after the all-star break. How he feels in the next week will help determine whether he can return in two weeks or one month.

Jeremy Peña, Yordan Alvarez Nursing Hand Injuries

The Astros were without both of their star young hitters on Sunday after Yordan Alvarez suffered a hand injury this weekend.

Jeremy Peña was placed on the 10-day IL with a left thumb injury he suffered on June 13 and was seen earlier this week donning a flexible cast. The Astros haven’t specified the nature and severity of the injury but he is being held from picking up a bat for a week and will be eligible to return late next week.

Superstars Suffering Minor Nagging Injuries

José Ramírez, Bryce Harper, and Ketel Marte eached missed games this weekend with injuries that aren’t expected to land them on the IL.

Marte is dealing with a left hamstring strain and is the most concerning as he missed two months last season with left hamstring injuries. The all-star underwent an MRI on Saturday and is expected to be available for the Diamondbacks' upcoming series.

Bryce Harper suffered a blister on his left hand that became infected over the weekend and “blew up” on him, according to Phillies' interim manager Rob Thomson. He is taking antibiotics and luckily won’t have to fit his hand into a glove when he returns as he is still being held out from throwing while he heals a torn UCL in his right elbow.

Joe Ramirez aggravated a previously jammed right thumb and missed the Guardians' last two games. He underwent an MRI on Sunday and Terry Francona is expected to announce the results in the coming days.
