Alex Smith will indeed sit out this week with a calf injury, and it will now fall to Taylor Heinicke to start in the Wild Card round. Given that Smith’s injury was to the same leg that nearly injured his career, it is unsurprising that he is sitting out. Heinicke knows Ron Rivera’s system from their time together in Carolina, and was 12 of 19 for 137 yards and a score last week in relief of Alex Smith. UDFA Steven Montez out of CU Boulder is the backup.
