Despite taking three out of four from the division-leading Texas Rangers, the Angels have lost three infielders in the past two days to injury.
Based on video analysis from our panel of doctors, both Anthony Rendon and Gio Urshela are likely to require stints on the injured list.
Starting shortstop Zach Neto was placed on the 10-day IL with an oblique strain he suffered on Wednesday, causing the team to recall Andrew Velasquez.
Urshela appeared to suffer a left hip injury on an awkward step after hitting the bag at first base. He initially stayed in the game, but was replaced by Jared Walsh on defense the next inning and was on crutches after the game.
By video, Urshela likely suffered a bone bruise in his left hip and possibly in his left knee. That injury will land him on the 10-day IL and he would be fortunate to avoid a 60-day IL stint.
Rendon reportedly underwent X-rays after Thursday’s game, but the team has not announced the results.
Manager Phil Nevin did say Rendon would get more images done on Friday, which is typically not a good sign. If the X-rays had come back negative and there was no worry of a fracture, the team would have said it outright.
If the fracture is confirmed, Rendon will land on Il and his return timeline will depend on the type of fracture.
The best case would have him day-to-day, but the left hand is crucial for providing power in a right-hander’s swing.
Without those two infield pieces, Brandon Drury and Jared Walsh are in line for more playing time.
Neto will miss extended time with his oblique strain, meaning Velasquez will man shortstop for the foreseeable future.
