Adrian Wojnarowski reported that Anthony Davis will be a game-time decision and intends to return to the Lakers Friday versus the Pelicans after missing the last 18 games with a right midfoot sprain.
Davis has not played – and hadn’t participated in a live practice until earlier this week – since suffering the severe sprain after landing awkwardly on a rebound on February 16, a little over 6 weeks ago.
Wojnarowski relayed on ESPN’s NBA Today show that while Los Angeles is hopeful he will play, he will not be 100%, a sentiment shared by our ProBasketballDocs, who have Davis at a 63 SIC Health Score ahead of his potential return.
The Docs have maintained that Davis would not be ready to play until the playoffs, if at all this season, which begin in about 2 weeks, but the Lakers’ 4-14 record without the all-world big man has likely accelerated his timeline.
Davis was in a similar situation in last year’s Western Conference playoffs.
The 29-year-old suffered a groin injury in a Game 4 loss to the Suns and, despite not being healthy enough to play, he started Game 5 but was a non-factor, playing only 5 minutes in a season-ending blowout loss. Davis recently said that his groin injury was the main reason that the Suns advanced in the playoffs.
Davis is averaging 23.1 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks in 37 games this season.
