Astros Injury Report: Jeremy Peña Sent To IL On Wednesday With Left Thumb Injury

The Astros placed rookie sensation Jeremy Peña on the 10-day IL Wednesday afternoon with left thumb discomfort.

Jeremy Peña Injury Update

The shortstop suffered the thumb injury on a diving catch in the third inning of Monday's game but was given the green light to stay in and finish the contest.

The Astros, who were playing in Texas, initially believed the injury to be in his wrist and sent him back to Houston for additional tests and treatment.

Despite the MRI showing nothing significant, according to general manager James Click and manager Dusty Baker Jr., he will be out for at least 10 days and won't swing a bat for at least a week.

Peña has been a leading force in Houston's success this season, slashing .277/.333..471 with nine home runs, 27 runs and 27 RBI while breaking out as one of the elite defensive shortstops in baseball.

The Astros, 39-24 and 9.5 games up in the AL West, should weather Peña's absence with a mix of Aledmys Díaz and Mauricio Dubon.
