Astros Place Closer Ryan Pressly on IL with Knee Injury

The Astros placed closer Ryan Pressly on the 10-day IL Saturday because of inflammation in his right knee.

The 33-year-old reportedly experienced soreness for consecutive days this week and the team made the decision to rest him.

Astros GM Andrew Ball told reporters this week, "Truthfully, I think this is something he probably could have pitched through, but we kind of said ‘Why don’t you take a breather … and get yourself 100 percent rather than trying to pitch through this and do some long-term damage."

This is a good sign for Astros fans because it sounds like a maintenance issue for the right-handed reliever.

The former Twins reliever is signed through 2025 and reportedly underwent a full physical examination before signing the three-year extension this offseason. The Astros clearly didn't see anything concerning with his knee then and it's unlikely he developed anything serious during spring training.

Hector Neris will likely get save opportunities with Pressly out, but Ryne Stanek and Rafael Montero will be in the mix as well.

Pressly should be able to return at full-strength after the short absence.
