Miami Heat all-star Bam Adebayo underwent surgery on Monday to repair his torn UCL and is expected to miss 4-to-6 weeks, the team announced Tuesday. Based on the way he plays, we expect that the 24-year-old big man should be close to fully healthy and ready for a full workload when he returns. Adebayo will likely come back with a thumb splint that he will need to wear for approx. 6 weeks.
A 6-week absence would bring the 2-time all-defense team member back to the Heat, who are 14-11 and the No. 4 seed in the East, on Jan. 17 versus the Raptors, putting him out 23 games.
The 24-year-old center suffered the injury, initially diagnosed as a thumb sprain, on Dec. 1, and has already missed 4 games. Miami, who is also without Jimmy Butler while nursing a tailbone contusion that has sidelined him for 5-and-a-half games, and Markieff Morris with a neck injury, will turn to Dewayne Dedmon to back their frontline. Guards Tyler Herro, Kyle Lowry, and Duncan Robinson will have to take on a bigger scoring load, while guard Max Strus and forward Cody Martin should see a bump in minutes.
