The Blue Jays have lost five in a row and eight of their last 10, but received a host of good injury news Saturday, chief of which is star centerfielder George Springer remains day-to-day and is not expected to go to the IL with his left ankle sprain.
Springer left Friday's game in the third inning after appearing to turn his left ankle on a failed jumping catch at the warning track.
Because he has a history of ankle sprains, the ProBaseballDocs anticipated he will have a short absence and could avoid the 10-day IL, which Blue Jays' manager Charlie Montoyo reaffirmed Saturday.
Raimel Tapia, who has started 28 games and played in all three outfield slots, started in center and batted ninth against the Rays on Saturday.
Veteran southpaw Hyun-Jin Ryu was activated off of the IL Saturday morning and made his first start since April 16.
The 35-year-old developed left elbow inflammation after struggling through his first two starts to the tune of 11 earned runs and a 1.77 WHIP over 7.1 IP.
The Jays hope the crafty lefty can provide a boost to a thin Blue Jays' pitching staff that has relied on the heroics of Kevin Gausman and Alex Manoah.
The duo has combined for 10 of the team's 13 quality starts.
Also returning from the IL on Saturday is catcher Danny Jansen.
Jansen suffered a left oblique strain on April 10 and has been gradually recovering since.
Alejandro Kirk and Zack Collins have taken 88 and 57 at-bats, respectively, while filling in for the expected No. 1 Jansen.
