The NL Central-leading Brewers placed shortstop Willy Adames on the 10-day IL, retroactive to Monday.
Adames suffered a high left ankle sprain as he slid safely into home in the second inning on Sunday.
The 26-year-old will be eligible to return on May 26, but could easily be sidelined for longer than the minimum 10 days, as high ankle sprains are often more severe and difficult to recover from.
Versatile infielder Luis Urias is likely to slide into shortstop while first baseman Keston Hiura was added to the active roster. Hiura hit a walk-off two-run home run in his first game back on Wednesday.
Adames is batting .208 and is tied for the team lead with nine home runs on 130 at-bats this season.
He had a breakout campaign after being traded to Milwaukee late last May, knocking in 20 home runs with 61 runs and 58 RBI on an .886 OPS across 99 games.
