San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is taking an important step in his rehabilitation from offseason surgery on his UCL.
Purdy will reportedly head to Jacksonville this week to spend the next few weeks working on his mechanics with QB coach Will Hewlett.
As the Pro Football Docs have detailed since the diagnosis of a torn UCL, Purdy has several hoops to jump through to be ready for Week 1.
He is reportedly progressing well in his recovery, but his timeline would have him ready just in time for the first game of the regular season on Sept. 10 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
While it’s certainly good news that Purdy is on track for a return this season, it begs the question of how he and the 49ers receivers will be affected by his lack of live reps at training camp.
Purdy will undoubtedly go through the motions when training camp opens in late July, but he will not be able to make throws at max effort until the end of August/beginning of September.
Trey Lance and Sam Darnold took most of the reps during the offseason program. One of those two will start Week 1 if Purdy’s arm is not ready or he experiences a setback.
Purdy worked out in Jacksonville with Hewlett prior to last year’s NFL draft, when the 49ers selected him with the 262nd and final pick in the draft.
“I want to just make sure my mechanics and everything are right,” Purdy said May 23 of his goals in Jacksonville. “So, I’ll go down, work with them for a couple of weeks, and then get back here.”
