The Brock Purdy recovery clock begins Friday, roughly three-and-a-half months away from the start of 49ers’ training camp.
All signs point to Purdy having a repair, not a reconstruction of the Tommy John ligament.
With a repair, also known as an internal bracing procedure, the quickest Purdy will be cleared to throw is likely three months. That is just clearance to begin his throwing program, it does not mean he will be ready to make all the throws required of a quarterback.
Before his surgery was delayed by ongoing inflammation, the Pro Football Docs were skeptical that Purdy would be ready for training camp. Now he has an even tighter timeline and it’s not a guarantee his arm will be in playing shape by Week 1.
In this previous article, we detailed quarterbacks who have undergone similar surgeries.
Purdy carries an SIC score of 50 because it's likely a 50/50 shot he will be ready to start Week 1.
Given Purdy’s murky return timeline and Trey Lance still on the mend from his Week 2 ankle fracture/dislocation, San Francisco is likely in the market for a veteran to be the third option at quarterback.
The 49ers got burned by a lack of quarterback health/depth in the playoffs and general manager John Lynch is highly unlikely to come into next season unprepared for every contingency.
Several names set to hit the open market make sense, but a Falcons OC/QB reunion with Matt Ryan and Kyle Shanahan may make the most sense.
The 49ers currently have the third-best odds to win Super Bowl LVIII at +900, according to FanDuel Sportsbook. The Bengals and Eagles are also at +900, while the Bills are at +850 and the Chiefs are at +600.
