Bud Dupree, the soon to be former Steelers linebacker, tore his ACL in early December and reports are optimistic that he will be ready to go at the start of training camp. Although that is a possibility, we believe it will be a difficult road for Dupree. It is much harder for a defensive player to return to full strength than an offensive player, because a defender needs to react rather than dictate where he's going. Due to the lateness of his injury and his dynamic skill set, we don't see how he'll be ready to go or be 100% for training camp. Expect him to be able to play this coming year but perhaps not reach full form till later in the season. Given that he's a free agent, the timing is not great for Dupree as he enters the free agency period. His best outcome may be a one year "prove it" deal and wait for next season to score a large contract. This is likely especially in a depressed salary cap season, combined with his major knee injury.
