Cam Akers Practices Fully on Repaired Achilles, Still Far From Starter Role

Rams running back Cam Akers practiced fully Wednesday for the first time since tearing his right Achilles tendon in July.

Head coach Sean McVay told reporters he expects Akers will be active for Sunday's game against the 49ers, but his role will depend on how he looks in practice.

ProFootballDoc, Dr. David Chao, said Akers may get snaps in a backup role to Sony Michel, but he doesn't expect much production right away from the 22-year-old.

Akers is just five-and-a-half months into his recovery from the torn Achilles, which typically carries a recovery closer to a full year.

Chao said video of Akers at practice shows he has recovered quicker than many expected, but he still favors his right foot on cuts.

Michel has taken over the lead back role for Los Angeles with Darrell Henderson Jr. out with an MCL sprain he suffered Week 16.

Henderson also had a nagging quad strain prior to that, allowing Michel to make five straight starts.

The former Patriots running back has averaged 99.4 yards and collected three rushing touchdowns in the past five games.

Chao said Akers' ceiling would be to split snaps with Michel in the playoffs, but Chao expects Henderson to be back as early as the divisional round.

To play in the wildcard round, Akers just has to beat out seventh-round selection Jake Funk.

The Rams clinch the NFC West with a win over the 49ers this Sunday. If they lose and Arizona beats Seattle, they would likely play Dallas in the wildcard round.

Akers played 13 games for the Rams last season, his rookie year. He rushed for 625 yards and two touchdowns and had 11 catches for 123 yards and a touchdown.

Henderson has 688 rushing yards and 5 rushing touchdowns in 13 games for the Rams this season, plus 29 catches for 176 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Michel has 802 rushing yards and 4 rushing touchdowns, plus 20 catches for 122 yards and a touchdown in 16 games this season.
