The likelihood we discussed on Sunday has now come true. The Panthers have placed Newton on injured reserve. Even though the additional opinions indicated no surgery on his lisfranc injury, the timeline for him to get to 100% was not going to be in just a couple of weeks. Even though Newton would be eligible to return if the Panthers made it to the postseason, it wouldn't be Newton's job anymore to begin with. With one year left on his contract at almost 21 million dollars a year, this decision has significant implications for Newton and the Panthers going forward.
