There is confirmaion that Cam Newton is flying for a second opinion from a foot specialist. There is indication that his Lisfranc foot sprain is not getting better and football is a ways away. At this point, there seems to be a second setback or at least a miscalculation of expectations. Newton first injured the foot on a non-contact play in the preseason. He was cleared to return to play and was active to start the season. After a re-aggravation of the injury in a Week two matchup versus the Buccaneers, he was expected to miss four to six weeks before returning at 100%. The second timeline has now passed. If reports that he is nowhere near ready to play are accurate, the possibility of surgery comes into play and that would carry a six to nine month recovery timeline. There are different degrees of Lisfranc injuries but based on initial reports and video, it seems to be milder in variety but maybe that has changed in the past weeks. The likelihood is that Newton and Panthers will need to decide to play him at less than 100% or stick with Kyle Allen for longer.
