The news was good after getting a second opinion from a foot specialist, but it’s still not ideal. Newton was told he would not need surgery, but it would be at least several more weeks of till he could take the field. He first hurt the foot in the preseason, but returned to play week one and left midway through Week 2. He’s been out for seven weeks now. My assumption was a mild lisfranc sprain and that would have meant a four to six week recovery timeline. Newton clearly is not close to 100% and we'll miss at least a total of eight games, which means he could have been placed on injured reserve and designated to return. This means he suffered either a second setback or miscalculation. The determination of injured reserve will depend on whether the Panthers and Newton stick to their original words of wanting to wait until he’s 100% before he returns. If they choose to stick with this mantra, we will soon find Newton on injured reserve and he will miss the rest of the season. With the original injury happening almost two and a half months ago, Newton still has symptoms which are preventing him from practicing. Given the circumstance, and at least a moderate lisfranc sprain, I would not expect a couple of more weeks to make a big difference. At this point, my expectation is that Newton will not be 100% this season. Assuming the Panthers and Newton stick to their plan of being fully healthy before playing, I believe the move will be made for injured reserve even though surgery is not needed.
