Cardinals running back Chase Edmonds will play this weekend for the first time since suffering a high left ankle sprain in Week 9.
Edmonds was designated to return from IR on Dec. 9, but head coach Kliff Kingsbury decided to hold him out of Arizona's MNF loss, setting up his return against the 1-11-1 Lions. It was late in that loss that fellow running back James Conner went down with an ankle injury of his own that doesn't appear serious.
Based on early practice video from Friday, both Conner and Edmonds were favoring their injured ankles, although Conner looked a little more fluid, and we expect him to continue to be the NFC West-leading Cardinals' most productive back.
Conner has been a workhorse, especially without Edmonds, gaining 964 yards from scrimmage with 16 total touchdowns in 2021, good for 2nd in the NFL. Edmonds has been slightly more efficient this season, gaining 641 scrimmage yards on 6 yards per touch. Both players will be relied on more heavily during the final 4 games of the regular season after DeAndre Hopkins underwent surgery for a torn MCL that will leave him out for at least 6 weeks.
