Cleveland Browns Preseason Report

Odell Beckham Jr. - WR

We remain optimistic for a big season from Odell Beckham Jr., as we discussed last month. He had a core muscle issue last year, but fought through it and surprisingly didn’t miss a game. His tenure in Cleveland got off to a mildly disappointing start, with just 1,035 yards and four touchdowns on 74 catches in 2019. Indeed, Beckham Jr. seems healthy and committed during training camp, while his receiver partner Jarvis Landry was just recently activated from the PUP list.

Jarvis Landry - WR

Jarvis Landry had hip labral surgery in the offseason and we have had our doubts if he would be ready and indeed, he started on the active PUP list. He has since been activated and we do expect Landry to play this year but he may not be effective early on and it may take some time to round into his usual form. He was productive last year with 83 receptions for 1,174 yards and six scores, but the former Dolphin may suffer statistically due to the lingering hip issue.

Austin Hooper - TE

The new, big money free agent signing for the Cleveland Browns missed three games with a MCL knee sprain, but finished the season with 75 catches, 787 yards and six scores. The 25-year old’s knee should not bother him as he suits up for his new team. The Stanford product did have a previous MCL sprain several seasons ago, but that has not slowed him down, and he’s likely to be the starting tight end next to David Njoku as new head coach Kevin Stefanski heavily utilizes two tight end sets.

David Njoku - TE

David Njoku missed nine games after breaking his wrist in Week 2. He underwent surgery on his scaphoid fracture and did return catching five balls for 41 yards and a score in a down year. There has been some offseason discontent that seems to be settled now. We don't see the wrist as a problem but the bigger battle is for targets with new tight end acquisition Austin Hooper. Perhaps he can get back to 2018 form (56 receptions, 639 yards, four touchdowns), but it’ll be an uphill battle to get touches in the Browns new look offense.
