Concussion History Shouldn't Haunt Ole Miss RB Jerrion Ealy

Ole Miss running back Jerrion Ealy enters the draft as an intriguing mix of speed and agility.

After three years at Ole Miss, he finished fifth in school history with 2,780 scrimmage yards and sixth in school history with 2,235 rushing yards.

His name is up there at Ole Miss with guys like Brandon Bolden, Dexter McCluster and Deuce McAllister.

At 5-foot-9, he projects as a third or fourth round pick that will be an asset mostly in the receiving and return game.

Healthwise, he fared pretty well in college. He did suffer two concussions two years apart and underwent a “cleanup” surgery on his right shoulder, but his knees and ankles came out unscathed.

The concussion history will be evaluated at the NFL Draft Combine, but that shouldn’t hurt his value much, said Dr. David Chao, ProFootballDoc.

Ealy’s shoulder injury is also a non-issue, Chao said.

The 21-year-old missed just one week after his first concussion in October 2019 and missed another week after a concussion in October last year.

Ealy was part of a three-man running back crew at Ole Miss last season, but led the team in yards in 2020 and 2021. He was a preseason first-team All-American and was All-SEC last season as a kick returner.

The young, agile back also set the Ole Miss freshman record for all-purpose yards with 273. That year, he had a 94-yard kickoff TD return and a 30-yard rushing touchdown.

Ealy could be an interesting addition to any team’s receiving and return game. The only question is when and where he will go.
