The struggling Cubs will get a boost to their rotation as offseason addition Wade Miley will make his season debut on Tuesday.
The 35-year-old lefty developed elbow inflammation in early April and has gradually ramped up his throwing and condition regimen. Miley threw his first rehab start on Thursday, tossing 46 pitches across four scoreless innings.
Miley posted a 3.37 ERA with 125 strikeouts in 163 IP for the Reds in 2021. He threw a 114-pitch, eight-strikeout no-hitter on May 7, 2021, but followed the performance with an eight-run outing that took 89 pitches in only three frames.
The Cubs, 10-18, have lost eight of their last 10 games, and their 6-0 win over the Padres on Monday stopped a five-game skid.
Chicago is 25th in the league with a 4.35 team ERA and 1.33 WHIP and are one of only three teams – along with the Reds and Tigers – without a quality start.
The Cubs are without ace Marcus Stroman who was placed on the IL on Sunday for undisclosed reasons, which likely signals a positive COVID-19 test.
