Daniel Jones, the Giants third-year quarterback, reportedly suffered structural damage in his neck Week 12 and must be cleared for contact before he can play.
When head coach Joe Judge said last week that Jones was "week-to-week" with a neck strain, it raised concern for Dr. David Chao, also known as ProFootballDoc.
Chao said neck strains are typically considered day-to-day, thus when he heard Judge say "week-to-week" he theorized last week that Jones was dealing with a more complicated issue. That has now been confirmed, but the extent of the structural damage remains unclear. Chao said Jones' should be able to avoid surgery as long as he doesn't sustain further structural damage to his neck.
At the very least, Jones will not play this week against the Chargers, Chao said. The neck issue needs time to fully heal, but that doesn't necessarily mean Jones' season is done.
Backup quarterback Mike Glennon is in concussion protocol after suffering a head injury during last Sunday's loss to the Dolphins. Glennon played the entire game and reportedly entered concussion protocol after the game was over. He logged a non-contact practice Thursday and must be cleared by an independent neurologist in order to play.
If Glennon does not pass concussion protocol in time for the game, former University of Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm would start.
The Giants also have health issues at wide receiver. Sterling Shepard has missed the past four games with a quadriceps strain and Kenny Golladay suffered an injury to his ribs last Sunday. Rookie Kadarius Toney missed the last two game with quadriceps/oblique issues and reportedly left practice early on Thursday.
