Hawks forward De’Andre Hunter will have surgery on a tendon injury in his right wrist and miss at least eight weeks, the team announced Sunday.
The third-year-starter sustained the injury during Atlanta’s loss to the Warriors on Nov. 8. He missed the next contest but returned to score 18 points in 21 minutes on Nov. 12 before leaving in the fourth quarter with wrist discomfort.
He underwent an MRI the next day that revealed the tendon injury. An eight-week absence would bring him on Jan. 9 vs. the Clippers, which would be the Hawks' 40th game.
Hunter played in only 28 of a possible 90 games during the regular season and playoffs last year as he dealt with a lateral meniscus injury in his right knee, eventually undergoing surgery in June.
He has averaged 10.8 points and 2.7 rebounds in 11 games for the 5-9 Hawks this season.
Six-foot-seven guard Kevin Huerter will start in his place, and fellow third-year forward Cam Reddish will be asked to step up in Hunter’s absence.
