Cowboys defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence reportedly suffered a fifth metatarsal fracture in his foot during practice today. The two-time pro bowler will undergo surgery to have a screw implanted and could return within 6-8 weeks. There is concern that this could be a long-term issue. The Cowboys star pass rusher broke his right foot in similar fashion during training camp in 2014. He missed eight games that year and returned to finish the season. It is not immediately clear if the injury this year is to the right foot or the left foot, but if the fracture is in the right foot expect him to be out longer than the eight week timeline. Lawrence had a "clean up" back surgery this offseason to fix a herniated disk. His pass rush production has dipped in recent years, with 5.0 sacks in 2019 and 6.5 sacks last season. He had five tackles and a forced fumble in the season opener this year. The Cowboys could now be without their two top pass rushers as defensive end Randall Gregory tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday.
