Derrick Rose, the former No. 1 overall pick in 2008, has not played since Dec. 16 last year with a nagging right ankle injury.
Now the ProBasketballDocs project the 33-year-old will not play again this season after reportedly undergoing a second procedure on his injured ankle.
When Rose underwent the first procedure he was expected to return at the end of February or early March.
With the news of a second procedure, a timeline for a potential return was not provided.
With the Knicks in 12th place at 25-34, the team's focus seems to be on next season. That is likely why the medical staff and Rose are opting for the second procedure. It also explains why the team is sitting veteran point guard Kemba Walker for the remainder of the year.
Walker has been bothered by an ailing knee the last few seasons, but he and Rose likely could play through the injuries if the team was in the midst of a playoff chase.
Expect Rose to be shut down for the season, much like Walker was.
Alec Burks is likely in line to take over the point guard duties, with Immanuel Quickley also in the mix.
Burks has provided decent numbers filling at point guard. He's averaging 10.9 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 26 minutes per game this season.
The Knicks take on the Heat Friday night in Madison Square Garden. Check out the game preview here and the Court View with the team SIC health scores here.
