After being named to his 4th All-Star team Thursday night, Warriors' forward Draymond Green revealed to reporters that he expects to be out for another 3-4 weeks as he rehabs his lower back injury.
Green shed light the source of the herniated disc, and said that neither he nor the team doctors believe that the issue will require a surgery.
Despite his aggressive optimism, our team of ProBasketballDocs are still skeptical of his projected timeline, as this type of back injury does not disappear.
His description of short-term weakness in the calf – which the team doctors immediately diagnosed as being sourced from his back – is on the severe end of the symptom spectrum, and only 1 step away from permanent weakness, which would certainly result in surgery.
Green said he is gradually regaining strength in his calf, and while that is a good sign, it does not mean surgery is off the table in the future.
The working 3-4 estimation is a best-case scenario for Green, and one that is unlikely based on his goal of returning only when he is 100% healthy and in shape.
Realistically, if he starts full practice next week, it will take his 2-to-3 weeks to get in shape. That is not taking into account the high possibility of a setback or aggravation of the herniated disc.
This estimation is covered with ifs, and, or buts, and even if he is able to overcome his symptoms and return in the near future, this injury will have to be closely monitored and treated with utmost care and caution.
In Green's absence, the Warriors have won 8 consecutive games and are 11-4 overall. Returning Klay Thompson has begun to find his stride, while rookies Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody are picking up more and more minutes at the forward position.
