The Steelers overall health score is set to take a steep dive ahead of this Sunday's matchup with the Chargers. Pittsburgh is dealing with injuries at key positions and COVID-19 issues. Star pass rusher T.J. Watt appeared to suffer a hyperextended knee in Sunday's tie against the Lions. Watt was injured late in the third quarter and did not play in the fourth quarter or overtime. His MRI reportedly came back "negative" for structural damage to the knee, but there was no news about swelling. Especially because it is his outside plant leg, we are concerned about possible swelling and are pessimistic that Watt will be ready to play by Sunday. The team will also likely be without cornerback Joe Haden, who is dealing with a mid-foot sprain, and safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, who was placed on the COVID reserve list Monday.
Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was placed on the COVID reserve list last Saturday and could return if he tests negative twice 24 hours apart. However, few players have met that metric this season and Roethlisberger's 10-day window will not be up by Sunday. We expect Mason Rudolph to start again this week. Second-year receiver Chase Claypool will also likely miss another game with his toe issue and two offensive lineman picked up ankle injuries last Sunday.
