Many are asking about the differences between Alex Smith's 2018 fracture and Dak' Prescott's broken ankle this Sunday. The key difference is that Smith suffered a long spiral fracture on his tibia, while Dak had an ankle fracture dislocation, which are vastly different injuries. Another important factor here is the risk of infection. Alex Smith went down on a grass field with more exposure to bacteria and organisms from the soil, and had a much more invasive surgery with higher risk. Dak went down on turf, with less exposure and the surgery to repair required only a mini-incision. This all means he has reduced chance of infection as opposed to Alex Smith's grade-3 wound, which was further complicated by a dirty sock. We feel good about his ability to get back out on the field by Week One next year.
