Update at October 3, 12:54pm - Kansas City Chiefs have placed Rashee Rice on IR due to his knee injury. Details of the MRI results are yet to be announced.
Rashee Rice suffered a knee injury in week 4 as analyzed in-game here, but does he have a torn ACL?
Pro Football Doc shares in the below video why swelling in the knee should not impact the results of his MRI.
In summary, the notion of "too much swelling" affecting the MRI's diagnostic quality is unfounded. In fact, swelling can sometimes enhance MRI imaging, similar to how contrast works. While excessive swelling may complicate a physical examination, it does not degrade the MRI's clarity, meaning any significant tears, such as an ACL injury, should still be visible regardless of swelling.
Dr Chao suggests that the team's statement about swelling may be a strategy to buy time while they seek second opinions on Rice's condition. During his time working in the NFL, teams often used "MRI pending" to manage player situations without disclosing immediate findings.
Overall, while Rice is likely to remain on injured reserve for now, there is cautious optimism regarding his potential return later in the season, pending further assessments and decisions by the medical team.
