Jazz all-star guard Donovan Mitchell was ruled out of Wednesday's game against the Rockets with concussion-like symptoms, the team announced.
Mitchell suffered the apparent concussion from an uppercut elbow from Russell Westbrook while he was attempting a swim-move pass with 27 seconds left in the 1st half.
Mitchell walked away holding his face, but he stayed in the rest of the game, scoring 7 points on 3-11 shooting with 6 rebounds and 6 assists in the 2nd half of the loss.
He reported symptoms during the 24-hour medical evaluation process after a suspected head injury.
The NBA's Concussion Policy stipulates that Mitchell cannot play the next day after he is diagnosed with a concussion, although he can begin his return-to-play process 24 hours after the injury if he is without symptoms. He will have to be symptom-free and cleared by team doctors before returning to the court.
This is the 25-year-old's 2nd concussion in the last year: he missed 2 games last January after suffering a concussion, staying in the game, and shooting poorly.
That is not any indication of how quickly he will return this time, as every concussion is unique.
The Jazz, 29-15, will turn to Mike Conley and Jordan Clarkson to lead the scoring and playmaking charge, with Trent Forrest, Denzel Valentine, and newly-signed Danuel House Jr. all viable to get more minutes.
Backup center Hassan Whiteside will also be unavailable as he works through health and safety protocols.
