Our initial fears about the Saints star QB's thumb injury are coming true. The TV broadcast said Brees would not return in the second half as he was having trouble "gripping the ball." This confirms our fears of at least a significant thumb sprain and potential instability with a ligament tear. If a tear of the ulnar collateral ligament is confirmed, the quickest way back could be surgery with the fastest return being four to six weeks. Even with the best case scenario of a simple sprain, this injury could easily leak into next week and beyond as grip equals accuracy for a quarterback.
