49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo suffered a calf injury Sunday against the Seahawks and left the game at the start of the second. Garoppolo said after the game that the injury happened when he was stepped on during the first offensive series. By video, we saw the San Francisco quarterback playing gingerly on the right calf after the first series and not stepping into throws. We did not see when he was supposedly stepped on because the incident happened off camera. Based on what Garoppolo and head coach Kyle Shanahan said after the game, we have optimism the 29-year-old suffered a calf contusion, not a calf strain. Garoppolo said his calf got tighter and tighter as the game progressed, which was evident by him running flat footed later in the half. He will get an MRI Monday to determine the severity and we hope it shows no strain or tear of the calf muscle. If either of those are present, he will miss multiple weeks and likely face an IR stint. Third overall pick Trey Lance would be the starter if Garoppolo misses time.
Update
Shanahan told reporters Monday Garoppolo is dealing with a calf contusion, not a strain. Shanahan also said Garoppolo has a chance to start this week depending on how he feels during practice.
