San Francisco starting middle linebacker Fred Warner suffered a left ankle injury in the fourth quarter against the Cowboys and did not return to the game.
By video, Warner was in pass coverage when he attempted to change directions, then fell to the ground without contact.
The 2020 Pro Bowl linebacker limped to the sideline and was checked out in the injury tent.
He was deemed questionable to return, but remained on the sideline the rest of the game.
Azeez Al-Shaair, playing for the first time since a Week 16 knee sprain, filled in for Warner.
The fact that Warner did not reenter the game does not bode well for his status next week against the Packers.
