Update: Lux's MRI revealed the worst case scenario, he suffered a torn ACL in his right knee and will miss the 2023 season. His recovery will likely stretch into the beginning of the 2024 season as well.
Los Angeles Dodgers middle infielder Gavin Lux left Monday’s spring training game on a cart after suffering a severe right knee injury running the bases.
By video, Lux appeared to suffer a bone bruise and ligament sprain (likely LCL) when his knee shifted to the right while stepping to avoid a throw, according to the Pro Baseball Docs.
In the best case scenario, Lux could avoid surgery but will still miss the first few months of the regular season.
The 25-year-old will undergo an MRI, which could show worse damage than initially shown by video. The hope is his ACL was spared, but that’s far from a guarantee, according to the Pro Baseball Docs.
Lux’s injury leaves the Dodgers with questions up the middle. He was projected to open the season as the starting shortstop, but now veteran Miguel Rojas will likely step in.
Chris Taylor is another option at short, while Miguel Vargas is an option at second base.
Los Angeles Dodgers World Series Odds
The Dodgers currently have the second best odds to capture the World Series title at +750, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
