Giants' Evan Longoria Out For Early Stretch of Season After Finger Surgery

Giants veteran third baseman Evan Longoria underwent surgery Tuesday to repair a ligament in his right index finger.

Longoria, who had yet to take an at-bat this spring, is out for opening day and likely a significant stretch early in the season.

The ProBaseballDocs note that ligament surgery on a finger is certainly out of the ordinary and his return timeline remains murky.

Depending on the procedure, the 36-year-old could be out anywhere from weeks to months.

Longoria recently told reporters the issue randomly flared up recently after he dealt with it late last season.

The three-time Gold Glove winner and three-time All-Star has reportedly been dealing with the finger injury since he was hit on the hand by a pitch on Aug. 18 last season. He missed 13 games after that at-bat and required a cortisone injection in his hand before returning on Sept. 3.

Longoria hit just .200 that month with 3 home runs, but missed just two games the rest of the season.

Following surgery, the finger is expected to require immobilization for at least 10 days. With opening day just 10 days away, the Giants will certainly need a replacement at third and that will likely be Wilmer Flores.

Thairo Estrada and Mauricio Dubon could also be in the mix for time there.

The Giants enter the season with a host of injury questions, including Lamont Wade Jr.'s knee, Brandon Belt's knee irritation and Tommy La Stella coming off Achilles surgery in the offseason.
