Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow will reportedly undergo surgery to remove his appendix and will have a delayed start to training camp.
However, there is no doubt he will be ready by Week 1 and he will likely only miss two weeks of training camp while recovering from surgery, according to our panel of Pro Football Docs.
Surgery is the surest and quickest way to get Burrow back under center for Cincinnati, as the appendix does not serve any function in the body. If not removed, it could flare up again during the regular season and cause him to miss a more crucial period of time.
The third-year quarterback was limited during last season’s training camp while recovering from his 2020 ACL tear and ended up only taking three snaps during preseason.
He went on to throw for 4,611 yards last season with 34 TDs and 14 interceptions while leading his team to its first Super Bowl berth since 1989.
The main effect will be lost time training with a new offensive line unit that includes new additions Ted Karras, La’el Collins and Alex Cappa. Those last two linemen are absent from the start of training camp dealing with their own injuries.
Burrow's SIC score is not getting downgraded one bit because of the appendectomy and the beginning of training camp is not the worst time for Burrow to have this pop up.
Other appendectomy examples include Ben Roethlisberger, Alexander Mattison and Austin Hooper.
Roethlisberger missed the season opener after his surgery, while Mattison and Hooper each missed two weeks.
