Here's Why Bradley Beal Is Having Season-Ending Wrist Surgery

Bradley Beal, the Wizards 3-time All Star shooting guard, will undergo surgery on his injured left wrist, ending his season.

Beal is having surgery because of a torn scaphulonate ligament, meaning the schaphoid bone and lunate bone are spread too far apart to be fixed with rehab, according to the ProBasketballDocs.

The surgery carries an approximate recovery timeline of six months, thus Beal can likely begin working with his non-shooting hand some time in August.

The 28-year-old suffered the injury on Jan. 29 while attempting to draw a charge against Grizzlies center Jaren Jackson Jr.

Beal fell hard on his left wrist to break his fall, but returned to finish the game. However, he missed the next five games and reportedly visited a wrist specialist last Tuesday.

Beal released a statement Tuesday which read, in part, "I'm disappointed to have my season end this way, but we all agreed that this was the best decision."

The surgery news broke two days before the NBA trade deadline, meaning Beal -- a coveted trade target -- will remain with the Wizards.

He has a $36.5 million player option next season, but is also eligible to sign a five-year, $245 million with the Wizards this summer.

Beal averaged 23.2 points, 4.7 rebounds and 6.6 assists in 40 games this season while shooting 45% from the field and 30% from 3-point range.

Aaron Holiday and rookie Corey Kispert will likely see increased usage in Beal's absence.

At 24-29, the Wizards currently sit 11th in the Eastern Conference.
