Often in the NFL, teams will use injury tags for ulterior motives. If crises precipitate change, we can often gain insight to how an organization feels about a player. This certainly applies to the Jared Goff situation now in retrospect. We always believed he would be able to play through his thumb injury, as he returned to the game and finished after hurting the thumb. However, it has now come out that there was a split between head coach Sean McVay and Goff, and in the wake of their trade in which the Rams acquired Matt Stafford, it makes sense that the would try to kick the tires on John Wolford before moving Goff. It is interesting that they tried to do so in the playoffs, highlighting a lack of confidence in their former 1st overall pick. Though the thumbs was certainly nothing to ignore, it seems the team played up the injury as they began the process of moving on from their quarterback.
