How Did Mike Clevinger Perform In Return From Second Tommy John Surgery?

Padres' righty Mike Clevinger started in the morning half of the Padres' Wednesday double-header against his former team, the Guardians.

Mike Clevinger Injury Update

Clevinger allowed three runs while racking up four strikeouts, three walks across 4.2 IP in only his fifth start with the Padres.

Two of the three earned runs came on a single by Josh Naylor that drove in two runners that Clevinger walked. His fastball was clocked at an average of 93.5 MPH and 54 of his 95 pitches were strikes in his first start since Sept. 26, 2020.

He underwent his second Tommy John surgery on Nov. 17, 2020, and despite anticipation for a strict pitch count, the 31-year-old hurled 95 pitches in the 5-4 win, likely because he has had time to ramp-up to his return.

Clevinger's return was postponed after he developed right knee soreness in early April during the lead-up to the season.

The Padres slowed his comeback and sent him down to the minors for multiple rehab starts in the first few weeks of the season.

Clevinger, who signed a two-year deal with the Friars on the same day he underwent surgery, has a 3.19 career ERA and an impressive 10 strikeouts per nine innings in his career.

He has only once made over 21 starts or thrown for more than 126 innings in a season, both of which came in 2018, when he tossed 200 innings in 31 starts with a 3.01 ERA.

Clevinger is joining a rotation that includes five-time all-star Yu Darvish, former Cy Young winner Blake Snell, top prospect Mackenzie Gore, and no-hitter hurlers Joe Musgrove and Sean Manaea.
