How Significant is San Diego Padres Xander Bogaerts Shoulder Injury?

Update: The San Diego Padres placed Xander Bogaerts on the IL with a shoulder fracture. He is expected to be out 2-3 months. Pro Baseball Docs anticipate a return sometime in August.

San Diego Padres second baseman Xander Bogaerts left the game on May 20th due to a left shoulder injury. According to video analysis by our panel of Pro Baseball Docs, the shortstop-turned-second baseman likely suffered a left shoulder subluxation, a transient dislocation where the ball of the shoulder joint slips out of the socket and back in.

Bogaerts has no history of shoulder issues, and initial imaging at the stadium was negative. However, the imaging conducted at the stadium was limited to X-rays and ultrasound technology, not a full MRI setup. At sicscore.com, we are concerned that further imaging could reveal a labral tear.

Manager Mike Shildt mentioned that Bogaerts' shoulder stability is currently intact but acknowledged that his range of motion is affected which our Pro Baseball Docs attribute to the immediate swelling and soreness. Although the shoulder might be stable now, this doesn't rule out the possibility that it previously popped out.

The worst-case scenario would be similar to San Francisco Giants' Jung Hoo Lee, who underwent season-ending shoulder surgery due to a significant labral tear.

The best-case scenario would be akin to Bogaerts' teammate Fernando Tatis Jr., who suffered minor shoulder damage that caused frequent dislocations when sliding and fielding. Tatis changed his batting style due to the injury before eventually needing surgery in the offseason. While Bogaerts' batting style and the type of hitter he is differ from Tatis, it will be interesting to see how he adapts.

We believe the position move from shortstop to second base was not the cause of this injury.

For now, expect a 10-day IL stint for Bogaerts. We believe the position move from shortstop to second base was not the cause of this injury.
