Chargers’ tight end Hunter Henry suffered a tibia plateau fracture. By video, it happened with 38 seconds left in the 4th quarter on an eight yard completion. Henry was hit low on the outside of the knee. Instead of the knee opening up on the inside resulting in a MCL sprain, the outside of his knee collapsed down causing the lateral tibial plateau fracture. Henry finished the game and played in overtime, even catching a 17-yard pass. The injury is not season ending and he will not need immediate surgery. This type of fracture is hard/impossible to see on X-ray and typically only seen on MRI, so the medical staff should not be blamed for allowing him to return. It is really closer to a bone contusion than what JJ Watt had last year. Henry is on crutches and undoubtedly in pain today due to the swelling, but can return in as few as 4-6 weeks. The team could play it safe and place him on IR. The Chargers continue to be hit with key injuries early on. Last year it was Henry with the ACL and Joey Bosa with the Lisfranc foot injury. This year it is Russell Okung with the blood clot in his lungs, Derwin James with the bent screw/refracture of the foot. The bad news is fracture, the good news is his season is not over.
