The Washington Commanders’ offensive line is a mid-tier line ahead of the 2022 season. Here are the health grades for two important pieces of the Commanders’ offensive line, Chase Roullier and Samuel Cosmi, according to our team of Pro Football Docs:
Roullier is now the centerpiece of the Commanders’ offensive line after the departure of All-Pro guard Brandon Scherff and new off season additions. Heading into the 2022 season, Roullier is considered a top 10 center in the league
However, the 29 year old guard is coming off a brutal left fibula fracture that held him out for the second half of the 2021 season.
Eight months since the injury and surgery, Roullier said he’s had a difficult recovery and hopes to return to the field sometime during training camp.
On the other hand, our panel of Pro Football Docs said they do not anticipate him being ready for training camp. Roullier will play this year but he is definitely not going to start the season healthy, according to the Docs. He potentially could be listed on the physically unable to perform list as well.
Before his injury last season, Pro Football Focus graded Roullier a 83.7 overall. The offensive line composed of relatively new faces in Trai Turner, Andrew Norwell, Sam Cosmi and Charles Leno Jr. will be tasked with blocking for mobile quarterback Carson Wentz.
The 2021 second round pick missed eight games of his rookie campaign because of two injuries. He first suffered a left ankle injury in Week 5 that kept him for four games. In his first game back from the ankle injury, Cosmi injured his hip and had to miss three games.
While he did return to the field after the hip injury, the Docs said they are more concerned about Cosmi’s hip rather than his ankle for this season.
Despite the injuries, Cosmi was productive. In nine games last season, the 23 year old right tackle received a PFF overall grade of 74.9 though he struggled pass-blocking. Cosmi finished as the midseason best rookie right tackle, according to PFF.
Last season was the first time in Cosmi’s playing career he missed significant time due to injury. He is using this off season to get healthy and become more consistent in pass-blocking.
Now, PFF believes Cosmi could be a potential breakout offensive tackle this season. His success has led to the Commanders’ coaches believing he could play an essential role and building block for the team.
