The Vikings number one tight end, who was a 2021 breakout candidate, will miss the season after undergoing surgery to repair his meniscus with sutures. Viking fans will remember when Adrian Peterson had a similar surgery back in 2016. There was talk of returning late in the 2016 season, and even with the great recovery powers of Peterson, he did not make it back. The healing of a meniscus takes a minimum three months plus recovery and rehab time meaning Smith will have to push his breakout season to 2022.
