Is Derek Stingley Jr.'s Foot Injury Still A Concern After Pro Day?

LSU cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. is widely regarded as a top 3 cornerback in the upcoming NFL draft.

However, an early October Lisfranc injury in his left foot robbed scouts of seeing him finish his junior season and kept him from working out at the NFL Draft Combine.

He is roughly 6 months into his recovery for an injury that takes about 6-9 months to heal, said ProFootballDoc, Dr. David Chao.

Stingley did post an impressive 40-yard dash time, 4.37 unofficially, at LSU's Pro Day on Wednesday. He also measured 38.5 inches in the vertical jump and 10'2" in the broad jump.

The straight line run test, broad jump and high jump show off his athleticism, but doesn't necessarily prove his foot is 100%, Chao said.

“He's not 100% at the moment and the real test will be the dynamic drills, when he has to plant and change directions,” Chao said.

In late February, Sports Injury Central covered Stingley's decision to forgo the draft combine and instead perform at his Pro Day.

That seems to be a prudent move for the 20-year-old.

Teams will likely want to check Stingley's foot again at the recheck combines, but he will likely be ready for training camp, Chao said.

Stingley projects as a top 15 pick and shouldn't be downgraded much, if at all, for the foot, Chao said.

He was a consensus All-American in his freshman year at LSU, when he led the SEC in interceptions (6) and passes defended (15).

The 20-year-old played 7 games in 2020 and just 3 games last season.

He forced 27 incompletions in his first two seasons and allowed just 1 catch for more 20 yards in 2020.
